Tom earned his Ph.D. with a specialization in sport
psychology from the University of Virginia in 1991, where he also served as the Cavaliers’ hitting coach for
three seasons. He then became a tenured professor and head baseball coach at Skidmore College (NY), before starting a coaching and consulting company in 1997.

Hanson also authored PLAY BIG: Mental Toughness Secrets that Take Baseball Players to the Next Level which won
ABCA’s Best in Show award in 2012. The book is a fictional account of
a young player learning the mental game from a mysterious coach.
Tom is a leading authority of mental game assessments which are used for
both player development and selection in baseball, softball, and other sports.
He has extensive experience coaching in both sport and business. Formerly full-time director of Performance Enhancement with the New York
Yankees, he also has consulted with the Texas Rangers, Anaheim Angels
and Minnesota Twins in professional baseball.
His business client list includes Fannie Mae, American Express, Transamerica, Kaiser Permanente, Microsoft, Verizon, Johns Eastern, Public
Trust Advisors and Kyra Solutions, and numerous small business owners.
He co-authored, with his wife Birgit Zacher Hanson
(a Master Certifi ed Coach), another best-seller, Who
Will Do What by When? How to Improve Performance,
Accountability and Trust with Integrity. The book provides a simple system for enhancing relationships, communication and effectiveness in the work place.
Tom lives in Tampa, FL with his wife, son C.J. and
daughter Angelina.
